I can't do justice to that finale, so I'm not going to try. Charlie! Penny! Naomi! Fat Bearded Jack! Bus Driver Hurley! Thunderthighs Sayid! WALTWALTWALT! Kate, however, continues to underwhelm.
See you in the comments!
Ready for tomorrow's Lost season finale? To get you in the mood, here's a hilarious recap of Season Three.
Here's an open thread to discuss Lost until Maggie has time to do her recap. :)
Okay, here I am! Short but sweet today. Jack very dramatically revealed his and Juliet's secret plan, which was to blow the Others to smithereens using the fact that for the first time they know when and how the Others will attack. Everyone worked together to wire up the tents that Juliet had marked for Ben. Rose and Bernard bickered about how to tie wires together. Sun decided against telling Jin that about her pregnancy being fatal for her. Charlie was thrilled to hear from Naomi that a big deal was made about the "dead rock star" from Flight 815, and that Driveshaft had released a greatest hits album in his honour. Desmond, ever the life of the party, sulked a whole bunch and then finally told Charlie that he had to die in order for the rest of them to get rescued, and told him how. Charlie then found out about the mission to swim to an underwater Dharma station, and volunteered for the job, thinking of Claire's and Aaron's safety. The Dharma station in question was blocking any signal from the island, and once Charlie was done, they should be able to use Naomi's satellite phone to contact her ship. Suddenly Carl showed up with the warning that they had to leave immediately, because the Others were coming NOW! Desmond and Charlie rowed out to the Dharma station where Desmond tried to take Charlie's place and perhaps die instead. Charlie wouldn't let him and swam in to find that the station was not abandoned like Juliet had said. Instead, he was greeted with guns to the face.

And there was the episode I have been waiting for!
Sawyer returned to the beach and showed the tape recorder to Sayid which started a chain of events that lead to the entire group learning about Naomi (Parachute Girl), the fake wreckage of Flight 815 and the fact that no one trusts Jack anymore. Once everything was out in the open, Jack showed up with Juliet and told them he knew about the tape. He said that Juliet had confided in him and the only reason he didn't share the information was because he didn't know what to do about it. Jack announced it was "time to catch up," and I guess they're all going to do that cool talking thing where people tell each other stuff now. Hooray!
Now, for the interesting part. Ben has been lying about being born on the island - well, unless you take it figuratively. Ben was born prematurely during a hike; his mother died and Ben's father flagged down a passing car. Ben's father became friends with his rescuers, and years later when he needed a job, his friends brought him along to join the Dharma Initiative where, to his dismay, he became lowly Roger, the work man (familiar?). Ben was about 12 and went to school on the island. His father treated him poorly and blamed him for his mother's death, and Ben began seeing his dead mother on the island. She told him that "it wasn't time yet."
At one point he'd had enough and tried to run away. He used the security code to deactivate the perimeter, then ran through the jungle calling for his mom. Instead he ran into Richard (aka Bat Manuel or Suddenly Susan guy), who was the SAME AGE THEN as he is now. Richard was one of a group of people referred to as "hostiles" by the Dharma Initiative. Ben confided in him about seeing his dead mother and said he wanted to go with Richard. Richard told him this would require great patience.
Back in the present, Locke arrived at the Others' new camp with his dead father on his back. He questioned Ben's authority and then demanded to go see the mysterious Jacob, to whom no one but Ben ever answers. Alex jumped out and handed Locke a gun, in front of everyone, saying that he'll need it if he's going to meet Jacob. Locke didn't believe that anyone but Ben was in charge amongst these people so he fearlessly followed.
At the end of their journey, Ben and Locke approached an old cabin, overgrown with vegetation. Ben warned Locke that Jacob doesn't like technology, and told him to turn off his flashlight. They entered the cabin, Ben faced an empty rocking chair and presented...no one.
Ben conversed with "Jacob" and introduced Locke, but Locke got angry and told Ben he was nuts. He was about to leave the cabin when he heard a gutteral, "Help me," and turned to ask Ben what he had said. Ben refused to admit the voice came from him. Locke turned on his flashlight and shined it around the room. Suddenly, things started flying around and windows broke. Ben grabbed the arms of the empty chair to admonish Jacob, and then was thrown violently backward. As the camera panned back we got a glimpse of Jacob! Did you see him? I did.
Locke and Ben left the cabin and Ben took him back through a different path, so he could show him something else. Ben told Locke the story of his past, ending it with how he became one of the hostiles, gassing his own father in the VW bus, perhaps as a rite of passage, and then returning to the Dharma compound to find everyone else dead as well. He showed Locke the pit where he helped Richard and his crew dump all the Dharma bodies. Ben then shot Locke, saying he did so because Locke had the ability to actually hear Jacob speak. This obviously threatened Ben very much. Locke fell into the mass grave, and told Ben what Jacob had said.
Wow. Locke couldn't kill his father so he got Sawyer to do it; Ben trusted Locke with the fact he and Juliet were stealing pregnant women from the beach; Locke's father/Original Sawyer thought they were all dead and in hell (or at least he was trying to get Locke and Sawyer to think so); Parachute Girl verified she was searching for Desmond on behalf of Penny Widmore and told them the "found" wreckage of Flight 815 included all bodies (conspiracy!); Sayid fixed Parachute Girl's satellite phone and used it too close to camp; Kate overheard so they told her about Parachute Girl but swore her to secrecy; Kate ran straight to Jack like an idiot; Jack and Juliet apparently have secrets of their own that they refuse to tell Kate (ha ha); Locke stole Ben's tape recording of Juliet revealing Sun's pregnancy and sent it back to camp with Sawyer; woo woo woo woo!
In Sun's flashback, we found out that she was instrumental in sealing Jin's fate as a hitman. We also found out that Jin's mother was a prostitute who abandoned him with Mr. Kwon as an infant.
On the island, Juliet offered Sun some answers about her pregnancy, but only in private and away from everyone else. Sun was suspicious but ended up trusting Juliet, telling her about her affair and Jin's sterility. Juliet took Sun to the medical building where there was a hidden ultrasound machine, and they determined that Sun's baby was Jin's after all, since she got pregnant on the island. This also meant that Sun would die, since no pregnant woman has survived on the island past their second trimester.
Once outside, Juliet told Sun she was going back in just to make sure they didn't leave any tracks. Sun chose to wait outside, but suddenly looked suspicious. When Juliet reached the lockers inside, she reached into one and pulled out a tape recorder. She left a message for Ben about Sun's status and promised to have samples from other women soon. I hope Sun heard everything.
Meanwhile, Desmond's mystery parachuter was about to die when suddenly Mikhail (he whose brain melted when Locke tossed him through the security fence) stumbled upon them, conveniently back from the (supposed) dead with all that medical expertise. He struck a deal with Desmond that if he saved the woman, he could walk away freely. Desmond agreed. When the woman came to, Hurley eagerly asked her if she was there to save them and told her who they were. She was surprised; she said Flight 815 wreckage had been found with no survivors.
Desmond seems to be in the habit of narrowly escaping marriage, doesn't he? Instead of getting cold feet; Desmond got purple ones. He became a wine-making monk and acquired his affectation of calling people, Brotha because the thought of marrying his girlfriend of six years was too much to bear. Getting fired from the abbey led him directly to meeting Penny Widmore, and as we already know, he left her high and dry as well. But he regretted it.
Desmond's latest flash of the future brought the possibility of Charlie getting shot in the neck by a booby-trapped arrow. It also showed him that someone, perhaps Penny, was on her way to the island and he realized that in order to fulfill the prophecy he had to preserve its events and let Charlie die. Desmond would regain his true love and finally be free of saving that pesky Charlie's life.
In his vision, a figure fell to the island by parachute and became entangled in some trees. Desmond set out to recreate his vision exactly as he remembered it, afraid that a slight difference would change the outcome. He convinced Hurley, Jin and Charlie to go camping with him, which Jin really enjoyed. In the end, Desmond couldn't do it and saved Charlie again. Then they found the woman in the trees, hurt but still alive. Desmond removed her helmet to find...someone else. But she knew his name.
Back at camp, Kate had sex with Sawyer because she was jealous of Jack and Juliet's relationship. Sawyer realized this during a ping-pong game with Jack. He then confronted Kate and made her feel stupid.
Juliet! What up with her?
Somehow, after everything that's transpired between her and Ben, he has still maintained quite a hold over her and together they've come up with a way for her to infiltrate the Lostaway camp and even gain their trust. During a flashback scene, they discussed Juliet's plans and their impending reunion, a week later.
Women on the island are unable to have children. I wasn't specifically clear on the details, but what I understood is that the women are actually dying at some point after conception. Juliet was brought there to solve this problem. Once Flight 815 crashed and brought them a healthy, pregnant woman, Juliet and Ethan studied Claire (against her knowledge) and very likely saved her and her child's life. But they also placed some kind of medical weapon into Claire's body, to be used later in case of emergency.
At camp, Claire got sick right on schedule and Juliet revealed that it was her and Ethan who had caused it weeks ago. She procured the medicine she needed which was planted by the Others, treated Claire, and was on her way to being accepted by everyone at the beach, with Jack remaining her biggest fan.
The look on her face as she built her shelter interested me. Juliet is very complicated and she's actually as much a victim as anyone else. I don't know what her plans are with Ben. I have no idea if she intends to carry them out or act on her own. So far it seems as though all her actions have been motivated solely by going home.
Also, are the Others aware of Sun's pregnancy?
Hurley tricked Sawyer into becoming a part of things at camp by making him believe he needed to make amends for his past behaviour or be banished. Hurley told Sawyer he is going to have to step up and be the leader everyone needs now that the others are gone. Sawyer balked at first, but then looked as though he might actually embrace this chance at redemption.
On the other side of the island, Locke approached Kate to say goodbye. He informed her he'd be leaving with the Others, and that he tried to put in a good word for her because she's an honest person. Then he revealed that the Others knew about her past and didn't agree. Kate was utterly confused and thought Locke might have been brainwashed somehow.
In the morning, the Others put on gas masks, tossed gas canisters around the compound and vanished. When Kate regained consiousness, she found herself in the jungle and handcuffed to Juliet. On their way back to the compound to save Jack (again), they were pursued by the black smoke monster, which apparently can't breach the perimeter of the compound.
Kate found Jack still unconcious and told him that everyone was gone. She apologized for ruining his chances at leaving the island. Juliet found Sayid, and the four of them discussed their plans. Sayid objected to bringing Juliet back to camp with them, but Jack insisted.
In Kate's flashback scenes, we learned that she inadvertently befriended Sawyer's old girlfriend and scam victim. They hit it off and Cassie helped Kate sneak past the cops and speak to her mother.
That was a really fun break for me. Hurley as a CSI, Sun decking Sawyer, Maggie Grace in a bad wig, newbies buried alive...what more could one want? Awesome.
As it turns out, John broke his back by getting tossed out of an eighth-storey window by his own dad in an attempt to protect a swindle. I didn't see that coming. Did you?
After Kate and Sayid spotted Jack playing football at the Others' barracks, they decided to wait until dark to spring him. John had his own agenda, so while Kate and Sayid were apprehended in Jack's room, John had snuck into Ben's apartment and demanded to know the location of the submarine. He also demanded the backpack Sayid was wearing. John sent Alex to retrieve it from where Sayid was being held captive. Sayid spoke to Alex briefly and pretty much told her that her mother was still alive. Before she returned, Ben accused John of wanting to destroy the sub with explosives he suspected were in Sayid's pack.
Jack spoke with Kate where she was being held and explained, to her dismay, that he had made a deal with Ben and would actually be going home shortly. He promised her that he'd send help back to the island. Juliet came in and told Jack that it was time to go.
Once John got Sayid's bag from Alex, Ben told him that communications with the island no longer functioned so there would be no way for the submarine to return. He said John could simply let Jack and Juliet leave instead of destroying it, but John had Alex lead him to the dock anyway. After planting the bomb, John was caught and led away at gunpoint. He passed Jack and Juliet on the dock and apologized; the submarine exploded.
Later on, Ben came to speak to John and admitted that scuttling the submarine enabled him to prevent Jack and Juliet from leaving the island without going back on his word and revealing himself to be a tyrant. Then, presumably as some kind of reward, he took John to a basement cell that contained his father captive.
Life for Charlie must be the pits.
Charlie: Oh, I'm going to have a grand day at a picnic!
Desmond: You sure about that, Brotha?
Charlie: Uh, no matter. A nice walk in the jungle, then.
Desmond: Sorry, bad idea.
Charlie: Well, then I'm just going to sit here and read this book.
Desmond: (takes book away) Sorry, Brotha. Infection from paper cuts. It isn't pretty.
Charlie: Fuck.
I enjoyed Claire's story. As many of us suspected, we found out that Jack's father and Claire's father are one and the same. In the not-so-distant past, Claire got into a car accident with her mom in the car and the mom ended up on life support. Suddenly a strange American shows up, having paid all the hospital bills, and it's none other than Jack's father. Claire denies him any relationship and never actually finds out his name.
While visiting with her mom in the hospital, Claire apparently watched a lot of nature shows. When she saw the sea bird flocks on the island, she thought maybe a message tied to one of them might reach civilization in the event the birds were tagged. This apparently set off Charlie's Death: Scenarios #462 through 465 and by trying to avert them, Desmond and Charlie alienated Claire so horribly that in the end, they had to tell her the truth.
In the jungle, our one-eyed captive made references to "the list" and told Kate she was too flawed to be on it. He also hinted that he actually knew John and almost spilled the beans to the others that John used to be paralyzed. Upon approaching the barracks, the group discovered a security perimeter and ol' One Eye told them he was sure it was broken. John grabbed him and tossed him through, proving that the perimeter was not only functioning, but a deadly sonic weapon. Did John kill the guy on purpose, in order to prevent everyone from finding out he used to be paraplegic? Why?
Kate decided they'd go over the perimeter. Sayid went to get John's axe from his pack so they could build a ramp, discovering that John had explosives in there, taken from the Flame. This tells me that he totally blew up the bunker on purpose. John's turning out to be quite the nefarious dude.
When they finally arrived at the barracks, they spied through the bushes and found Jack right away. Playing touch football. With Tom, the very same man who held them all captive. Awesome.
Another great episode. If John ever gets off that island, I doubt he'll ever go near a computer again.
Following the "bearing" from Eko's jesus stick, Kate, Sayid, John and Rousseau stumbled upon a little farmhouse, complete with cows, satellite dish, and one-eyed man named Mikhail. Rousseau refused to get involved and chose to wait for them by the river. Once Sayid, Kate and John gained entry to the house, the man pretended he was the last of the Dharma Initiative, and that he was allowed to live alone because of a truce with the "hostiles." He said the house was a Dharma station called, The Flame, and that its purpose was to communicate with the outside world.
Sayid suspected the man of lying about being alone and let Kate in on it during a private moment. They all played along for a bit, but Mikhail called their bluff. After a brief scuffle, Mikhail was subdued and left under John's guard. Sayid and Kate went to explore the basement, and John resumed a computer chess game he was drawn to earlier. Once he beat the game, the Dharma orientation man appeared on the screen with options including accessing the satellite dish and sonar equipment. John tried, but both the satellite and sonar were confirmed inoperable.
Downstairs, Sayid and Kate discovered that the basement was wired entirely with explosives. They also found a bunch of Dharma manuals...and Miss Klu. Upstairs, the computer was asking John to enter "77" if the Flame station had been infiltrated by hostiles. Before John could do it, Mikhail got free and took John hostage outside.
Using Miss Klu as a bargaining tool, Sayid and Kate tried to get John away from Mikhail. In Russian, Klu plead with Mihail to kill her, which he grudgingly did. What was she protecting? After dark, Rousseau joined them as they left the Flame with a map to where they think the Others live. Just then, the Flame exploded. Oops. To his credit, Sayid did not kill John.
At the beach, Sawyer was still whining about his personal stash being distributed while he was gone. The crew was busy putting together a ping pong table that Jin "found" in the jungle, so Sawyer showed up with a ping pong ball that he offered to give them if someone could beat him in a game. If he won, he would keep the ball and get all his stuff back. If he lost, Sun said he would have to refrain from using nicknames for a week. Hurley was the challenger, and since we all know that crazy people play a lot of ping pong while visiting the nuthouse, the outcome was pretty obvious. What was so great about it, though, was that Hurley returned to Sawyer a bunch of Playboys and told him that they know he's a guy who "needs things." It's nice to see Hurley confident and cocky.
Great episode this week! Hurley and Charlie were in fine form, Sawyer taught Jin all the good English, the flashback was relevant and fun (yay for Cheech and the commisioned, golden Jesus) and there was beer, too. Although it was mostly a filler episode I was happy enough with the bit at the end between Kate and Rousseau.
You guys, I don't even know what the hell. Jack was moved from his indoor cell to Sawyer's former bear cage so that Juliet could be imprisoned for murdering Danny. Bai Ling. Yadda yadda yadda, Jack agreed to continue to provide medical care for Ben if he stepped in and saved Juliet from a death sentence during her trial. Which he did. Bai Ling. But Juliet was still sentenced to be "marked," which had special significance for Jack which we learned about during his flashback.
At some point Jack spent some time in Thailand where he befriended Bai Ling, who not only knew how to fly kites, but also excelled in arts such as dressing scantily, recieving giant envelopes of money, and behaving mysteriously. She never spoke of herself, and would only tell Jack she had a "gift." (I admit, "ladyboy" was totally my first thought.) One night Jack followed her and learned the truth. Her gift was that she could really see who people were inside and then she'd tattoo her clients with traditional equipment. Jack insisted she see him; she told Jack he was a leader and a great man, which caused him to be very lonely. He insisted she tattoo him despite her warning of consequenses. The next day (presumably), Bai Ling's friends beat the crap out of him and told him to leave the country. Later we learned that his tattoo says, "He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us."
We also learned that the kids and people abducted by the Others so savagely were living nice, fun lives and wearing lovely clothing. Bai Ling. Ethan was a surgeon before he went all crazy and Charlie killed him. The Others live on the same island as the castaways and have backyards.
Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer blah blah. Bai Ling. Juliet's mark turned out to be a starburst branded in the small of her back. What does it mean?
I haven't been able to watch Lost yet this week, but I suppose you guys can go ahead and talk about it without me.
It's been a while since I've posted about this show and I'm not really sure how to segue into anything, so I'll start by pointing out that for such a fast-paced episode, not a lot actually happened. Most of the suspense was created by power passing back and forth between Jack and Juliet in the operating room. Then Ben woke up, said something in private to Juliet, and she sprang into action to help Kate and Sawyer escape. Jack held up his end of the bargain and began to complete Ben's surgery.
Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer were running for their lives when Alex popped up and helped them hide. She offered them her boat but first they had to help save her boyfriend, Carl. They found Carl drugged and forced to viddy films in a holding cell. When they reached Alex's boat, Juliet appeared just in time to save their lives by killing Danny, one of the meaner Others. She let Kate and Sawyer take Carl back to their island, but warned Alex that if she went too, Ben would surely not let Carl live.
While Ben recovered, Jack asked Juliet what Ben could possibly have said to make her change her mind; Ben said he would let her go home.
Juliet's flashback was interesting. A fertility specialist, Dharma tried to recruit her but she declined, commenting that perhaps if her ex husband were hit by a bus, she might be able to leave her present job with his company. Guess who got hit by a bus later that very day?
I don't know if I'm going to be popular today, but I have to say I was pretty disappointed with the half-season finale/cliffhanger.
Kate's flashbacks were about her marriage to a cop (Nathan Fillion, yay!) while she was on the run. She called her US Marshall friend and asked for a reprieve because she was in love. He told her that if she really could stay put and settle down, he might oblige. As it turned out, she couldn't. A pregnancy scare told her she did not love her husband enough to play the part of a regular, everyday wife even if it meant she might not have to be on the run anymore. This was apparently supposed to contrast with her feelings for Sawyer, someone she'd be willing to die for.
Kate was brought to see Jack in order to beg him to operate on Ben because she was told that if he didn't, Sawyer would be killed. Jack said no, and Kate was sent back to her cage. Once alone, she hopped out, broke the lock on Sawyer's cage and urged him to run. He broke the news that there was nowhere to go, that they were on a different island and completely trapped. Then they made wild jungle sex and professed their unlikely yet endless love for each other.
In the meantime, Alex somehow contacted Jack through the "broken" intercom in his cell and told him his door was unlocked. He walked out and found a big gun closet. He helped himself, then noticed Kate and Sawyer all nekkid together in Sawyer's cage. Ben approached and Jack finally agreed to perform the surgery in the morning.
While Jack was preparing to operate, Danny the Taskmaster decided he was going to kill Sawyer. In the operating room, Jack deliberately put Ben's life in danger in order to orchestrate Kate's escape and was able to speak to her through walkie talkie, just before Danny was about to shoot Sawyer in the head. Having no idea that the three of them are trapped on an entirely different island, Jack told Kate to run and that she'd have an hour to get away, or he was going to let Ben die. Kate insisted she couldn't go.
While all of this was happening, Locke, Sayid and friends buried Eko on their own. While Locke was giving his eulogy and marking Eko's grave with the Jesus stick, he noticed a passage which read, "Lift up your eyes and look north. John 3:05" But we won't get to find out what Locke sees until February.
I was intrigued by Alex's appearance earlier in the episode and can't wait to hear more of her story.
What fun! I have no idea what the hell happened, but here goes. Desmond suggested that the computer in the hatch could have been used for communicating with other Dharma stations, which gave Locke the idea to head for the Pearl hatch in order to contact the Others somehow. Eko, haunted by visions of his past, left camp abruptly after mumbling about his brother. Locke thought he must be heading for the plane that contained Yemmi's body. Since the plane and the Pearl were in the same location, Locke wanted to head out and find Eko on their way. Sayid, Desmond and the two new cast members (whose names I didn't catch) joined him.
Meanwhile, Ben discovered that Jack knew about his cancer, ruining his plans of psychologically manipulating Jack into saving his life. Interestingly, Juliet secretively communicated to Jack that while on the surface everyone seems to love Ben and feel he's a great leader, what many of the Others would really get a kick out of is watching him die on the operating table. She said they wanted a change. Whee!
Locke and his party ran into Eko near a stream. He had just bent down to drink when he saw a reflection behind him and turned to find the black smoke monster. Locke noticed that Eko had seen something, and once they reached the Pearl he asked it if were similar to his own experience with a beautiful bright light. Eko said no. He then discovered that his brother's body was not in the plane where he had last seen him. He decided to wait outside while the others entered the Pearl.
Inside, Sayid determined that the computer was only networked one way, and they wouldn't be able to use it as they'd like. The new female cast member watched the Dharma orientation video and then wondered about the rest of the televisions in the room. Sayid managed to get a picture on one of them; a menacing man with an eye patch who apparently could see them as well. Locke seemed rather amused and commented that the man would be expecting them.
This is where the show totally lost me. Eko ran after an image of his brother, who asked for his confession. By this point, through flashbacks, Eko had come to terms with his past and asked for no forgiveness, saying he only did what he had to do to survive. He mentioned that he was proud to have saved Yemmi's life when they were children, even though it meant he had to kill an innocent man. Yemmi seemed angry, and then revealed he wasn't who he seemed to be and walked away. Eko demanded to know who he was and chased after him. The black smoke monster revealed itself again and formed a fist, grabbed Eko and smashed him all around the jungle, into trees, into the ground. Locke and Sayid heard the noise and ran out of the hatch to find Eko beaten to a pulp. He was able to whisper something to Locke right before he died. He whispered that they (presumably Locke and the others) were next.
Huh?
I'm going to go ahead and open up a comment thread for Lost until Maggie gets a chance to do her recap. Have at it!
This week we've gone back to shortly after the explosion (implosion?) at the end of last season, when Desmond turned the failsafe key and the hatch ceased to exist. Locke came to, unable to speak, and staggered back to camp. He mimed to Charlie he needed to commune with the island and built a sweat lodge. Charlie stood guard while Locke meditated. In the lodge, Boone appeared and gave Locke the message that he needed to clean up his mess; that Eko needed his help and that the polar bear had gotten him. Locke came out of the sweat lodge able to speak again, and he and Charlie set out to find Mr. Eko.
During their trek they ran into (read: almost killed) Hurley. He was on his way back to camp with the message from Ben, that Kate, Sawyer and Jack were imprisoned and if everyone else wanted to remain safe, no one should come looking for them. Locke and Charlie continued on their quest and Hurley continued on his way back to camp.
Hurley then ran into Desmond, who somehow managed to escape the implosion with nothing more serious than a scorching case of nudity. Hurley gave him a shirt to wear and told him Ben's message. Desmond said that Locke would be going to rescue them, after all he had said so in his speech. What speech? Hurley looked perplexed and Desmond became confused. He said he was kind of mixed up after what happened.
Locke found Eko in a cave, unconscious and laying among the bones of many people or animals. Eko woke up, suprised to see Locke, and they narrowly escaped the polar bear on their way out of the cave. Outside, Charlie helped Locke carry Eko to safety.
Throughout the episode we got to see some more of Locke's backstory. His flashbacks occured at some point after his last incident with his father. Locke had picked up a hitchhiker on the highway, a kid named Eddie who was looking for a new life. They were pulled over by police who found many guns in Locke's truck, but Locke seemed to have the proper paperwork for them and they were let go. Locke brought Eddie to the commune where he was seemingly living a happy hippy lifestyle, farming peaches. Instead, they were farming great gobs of ganja in a giant greenhouse.
Eddie remained with Locke and his "family" for about 6 weeks until they realized that Eddie was an undercover cop. They started packing up the business. Locke insisted he'd take care of the problem, devestated that it was his fault his new family was in trouble. He took Eddie hunting with the intent to kill him in the woods, but he found he couldn't and Eddie walked away.
On their way to camp with Eko, they paused so Charlie could get water from the stream. While he was gone, Eko told Locke that he would find and save Jack, Sawyer and Kate because he is a hunter. When Charlie came back with the water Locke realized that Eko had been unconscious the entire time, and had not actually spoken.
Finally back at camp on the beach, Hurley broke the news about Ben and the Others but before everyone panicked, Locke made a speech about how everything will be okay, that he will go and bring back Jack and the rest. Everyone then rushed to tend to Mr. Eko. Stunned, Hurley remembered what Desmond said to him earlier and told Charlie he has deja vu. What happened to Desmond during the implosion? How did he survive what happened in the hatch? Did he see the future? What's going on with the polar bear? And we still haven't found out how Locke lost the use of his legs.

It's Day 69 on the LOST island, and I have questions ...
It turns out Benry has lived on the island his entire life??? What's up with that? Is he a product of the Dharma Initiative from birth? And his name is Benjamin Linus. Which first made me think of Linus Pauling, the quantum biochemist, best known in his later years for championing the use of Vitamin C. A scientist's (instead of a philosopher's) name would certainly be consistent with Dharma. And Benjamin is a biblical name. There's a great description in the Bible: "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, and in the evening he divides the plunder." Sounds about right.
It's clear now that Benry & Juliet were an item once. "You never made soup for me." And it's also clear that despite her outwardly friendly face, Juliet is perhaps as cold-blooded and calculating as Benry himself, as evidenced by how calmly she pulled that gun on Kate. Did she even mean to be nice to Sawyer by offering him that water -- or was it just a test, to see what he'd do?
I was glad to see the return of Alex (who was also born on the island). Although I wonder what she and Carl had planned? Why is Kate not supposed to be in THAT cage? Oh and Carl is Alex's age -- so was he born on the island too?
Did Sun just make an enemy of the Others by firing that gun? Certainly the taskmaster (Danny) who's been hounding Sawyer won't be happy, since the woman that Sun shot (Connie) looked to be his sweetheart. And by the way, we're now even LESS sure about who the father of Sun's baby is. Although I guess Jin will never know this unless Sun tells him. And based on the opening scene, Sun seems pretty good at keeping secrets. Anybody have any ideas about what the glass ballerina was a metaphor for?
What sort of craziness will JinSunSayid encounter while hoofing it back to the camp? And why did Benry want their sailboat so badly? Just because he doesn't want the castaways to have it? Or because he needs it for some purpose? Because if it was the former, why not just tell his people to destroy it? And why did he seem so surprised that the sailboat even existed? Was Big Brother Benry actually not aware of Kelvin & Desmond? Or has he known about the sailboat all along, and knows that there's something special about it?
Next week, we finally get to see what's up with Locke, Hurley, Charlie, "and the rest" back at the camp ...
At the end of last season, Michael and Walt escaped on a boat, Hurley was sent back to camp to warn everyone not to come looking and Kate, Jack and Sawyer remained prisoners of the Others and their leader, the faux Henry Gale.
This season the opening scene is of a woman nervously preparing for guests. She's hosting a book club and ends up getting into a fight with one of her guests over her choice of book when an earthquake hits. After the rumbling subsides everyone rushes outside to see what's going on. Lots of confusion...and who was that coming out from under the house? It looked like Ethan. A man comes out of another house in the neighbourhood, it's faux Henry! He and the book club host look up in the sky together to see an airplane split in half and crash in the distance. The idyllic neighbourhood is actually on the island. Faux Henry (who we learn is called Ben) starts barking orders, sending Ethan to pretend he's a crash survivor from the front of the plane, and Goodwin to do the same for the tail end. Very strong opening scene!
Next, Jack is having a brief flashback in which he remembers following his ex wife, Sarah, around town. He sees her on the street with a young boy and a man. In the present Jack is being held in a room with a glass wall, and he's yelling for Kate. The scene cuts to Kate just waking up to find one of the Others (Zeke, the bearded man from last season) standing over her in a big locker room. He offers her a shower, and leaves. Sawyer, we then see, is being held elsewhere in what looks like an animal pen, outdoors. Across from him is a kid in another pen. Sawyer notices a contraption with a symbol for food on it, he pushes at it a few times and gets a shock for his efforts.
Back to Jack in his cell. The woman who hosted the book club walks into the room on the other side of the glass wall and introduces herself as Juliet. Jack ignores her for the most part. During their meeting, Jack has another flashback: he walks into a lawyer's office, presumably to meet with his soon-to-be-ex, Sarah, and her lawyer. They get into an argument because Jack wants to know about her new man and she refuses to tell him.
At this point Kate finishes her shower only to find her clothes have been replaced with a very feminine dress. Once dressed, she is escorted down to the beach and meets Ben, who is sitting under a gazebo with breakfast and coffee. He asks her to put on a pair of handcuffs that were on the table, which she does. He explains that he is offering her nice clothing and a civilized breakfast so that she'd have something to hold onto because the next two weeks are going to be very difficult.
In flashback, Jack recalls sitting in his office, calling numbers he found in Sarah's cell phone. His father walks in and tells him to stop. Jack does not, and the next number he calls turns out to be his father's phone. Jack gets very angry and demands to know why his wife has been calling his dad, but his dad just tells him to let it go. In the present, Jack hears some static and a voice from an intercom on the wall of his cell. He barely makes out his father's voice saying, "Let it go, Jack." Juliet then comes in and Jack refuses her offer of food and water. She points out that the intercom hasn't worked in many years, perhaps Jack is hallucinating.
Back to Sawyer. The kid in the pen across asks him about his camp and the people there. While Sawyer is fiddling with the food contraption again, trying to get it to work, the kid lets himself out of his pen with a key and lets Sawyer out. He then tells Sawyer which way to run. Sawyer runs away but gets caught when Juliet startles him and then shoots him with a taser. Sawyer finds himself back in his pen, and the kid who let him out is forced by Zeke to apologize for involving Sawyer in his escape plan. The kid now has a bloody face and the Others drag him away.
Juliet returns to Jack with more food and pleads with him to eat for his own health. He finally agrees and sits in the corner so she can enter. We cut to Jack's flashback: his father gets a phone call on his cell and leaves the hospital, so Jack follows him to what seems to be an AA meeting, where we find out he's achieved 50 days of sobriety. Jack's suspicions about his father and Sarah get the best of him and he ends up attacking his father. Back in the present, Juliet is about to enter Jack's cell with the food when he lunges and subdues her with a broken dish. He drags her out to a door which he demands she open. She refuses, saying they'll both die if she opens the door. Ben enters the hallway and Jack threatens to kill Juliet. Ben doesn't seem to care. Jack throws Juliet to the ground and opens the door himself. Ben runs to escape, locking Juliet out with Jack. The hallway fills with water and Juliet helps Jack get back to the cell where he manages to hit an emergency button. Juliet knocks him out and locks him up again.
Sawyer, clever bear that he is, has meanwhile figured out how to get food and water to dispense from the contraption in his pen. He wins a big fish biscuit and some grain. As he's eating, Kate is brought to the pen that used to be occupied by the kid. Zeke locks her up and removes her handcuffs, and we see her wrists are raw and bloody. Once Zeke leaves, Sawyer offers Kate the biscuit and she gladly accepts. She seems hungry...perhaps she did not cooperate with Ben on the beach?
Jack wakes up to find himself in the same arrangement as before. Juliet has a big file on the table in front of her, and they are speaking through the glass wall again. Jack determines that he is being held in a large aquarium that is entirely underwater. Juliet confirms they are in the Dharma station called the Hydra. He asks about the file, which Juliet tells him is about his life, friends and family too. She says she has his father's autopsy report. Jack has another flashback, he's in jail from having attacked his father at the AA meeting. Sarah shows up to bail him out. She tells him that his father called her, and he was very drunk. Jack sees Sarah's new man in the background and demands again to know who he is. She tells him that it only matters who Jack is not. After the flashback, Jack asks Juliet if Sarah is happy. Juliet says that she is. Juliet offers to get Jack some food again, and Jack promises to behave. Juliet leaves the room and meets Ben in the hallway. He congratulates her on a job well done.
TVGasm kindly posted this fascinating video - the video that was unlocked if you were playing the webgame. Which I wasn't, because, contrary to popular belief, I actually went outside a couple times this summer. The video isn't spoilery; it's just supplemental information that tells more about what Hanson and Dharma are up to. Oh, and an explanation of the numbers.
